What an epic, historic duel: River Plate and Boca Juniors have to travel for the second leg of the Copa Libertadores final to Madrid.
The two Argentine giants played out a thrilling 2-2 draw in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores final that took place a day later than scheduled due to heavy rain in Boca’s “Bombonera”.
The fans in Buenos Aires don’t call it not only “El Superclasico” but “The Game of the Century”. Not surprisingly, Boca and River are the two most successful football clubs in the country and it is estimated that up to 70 percent of all Argentine football fans support one of the two teams. This Superclasico was once ranked by newspaper The Observer in its top spot of the 50 sporting events you must do before you die.
Boca supporters call River “gallinas” (chicken) because they’re gutless, having choked by blowing a two-goal lead against Penarol in the 1966 Copa Libertadores Final. River call Boca “bosteros” (garbage collectors).
The original fixture between River and Boca was moved more than 6,000 miles from the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires to the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, the home ground of Real Madrid, after the game was twice delayed two weeks ago. An attack on the Boca team bus by River Plate fans left the players unable to play or the hastily rearranged kick-off 24 hours later.
View into statistics: Boca has won the title six times since the tournament began in 1960. River can win its second title since 2015 and the fourth in its history if it can emerge victorious.
